Each terracotta jali brick is pressed from clay in a mould, dried and then fired in our kiln at Kakkar Majra. Firing is what turns soft clay into a hard block and gives it the orange-red colour. No paint or pigment goes on, so there is nothing to peel or fade.
Five patterns, one size
Petal, Flower, Square, Camp and Opal all measure 8 × 8 × 2.5 inches. You can change your mind on the pattern without changing the opening, and you can set a band of one design inside a field of another.
How open is each design?
Opal and Petal have the largest openings and let through the most light and air. Flower and Square sit in the middle. Camp is the most closed: a hood covers the face and air passes through a slot at the bottom, which also helps on walls that take driving rain.
Where terracotta jali works best
Anywhere the building already has brick, or where you want a warm colour that needs no paint: stair walls, terrace parapets, boundary walls, courtyards and screens in front of west-facing windows. Laid in cement mortar like brickwork, inside a frame.
Looking after it
Wash with water and a soft brush. On exposed exterior walls you can apply a clear, breathable sealer for brick and terracotta once the mortar has cured. Avoid paint if you want to keep the clay look.

The count uses only whole blocks that fit inside your size. Cutting a jali breaks the pattern, so the leftover space is usually filled with mortar, plaster or solid brick at the edges.

Will a terracotta jali fade in the sun?
The colour comes from the clay and the firing, not from paint, so there is no coat to peel. Outdoors, dust and, in damp shaded spots, moss can dull the face over time. A wash with water and a soft brush brings it back.
Which terracotta jali design gives the most privacy?
The Camp Jali. Its face is a solid hood with the opening at the bottom, so you cannot see straight through it. Square Jali sits in the middle, and the Petal, Flower and Opal designs are the most open.
Should I paint or seal a terracotta jali?
Painting hides the clay and needs repainting later. If you want protection, use a clear, breathable sealer made for brick and terracotta once the mortar has cured.
Can terracotta jali go on an exterior wall?
Yes. It is fired clay and suits facades, parapets and boundary walls. Cap the top course with a sloped coping so rain does not sit on the blocks.
